Thursday 2nd January
I
can’t believe that Christmas has gone by so quickly. It’s the second of January
already. Right, well I know it seems like I’m copying Josie here, but my New
Year’s Resolution is to right in here more. Yep, I can already sense that’s not
gonna happen. I can try though, can’t I?
The
past few days were fun. I’ve been hanging out with Josie every day. We’ve been
in the library a lot. We’ve had it all to ourselves… well mostly. Potter and
his friend have popped in a few times, claiming to be researching some Hogwarts
history. I don’t believe them. One of the times the boys were in the library,
Josie did wander off to go and talk to Potter. She told me that she was just
recommending him a book, but I’m sure there was more to it than that. She
probably just didn’t want to tell me, because she knows that I don’t really
like him that much.
As
for our search on finding out about the key. It doesn’t look too promising. We
had out the entire section of books that were directly linked to the castle and
its creation. We had books scattered all over the floor. It really is a good
job that nobody else was around. The librarian would have been furious. Jumping
from one book to the next, I could see that Josie was starting to get
frustrated. Pushing a book away from herself, Josie lent back against a
bookcase and clawed a hand through her hair. Gathering up her hair, Josie tied
it up, before pinching the top of her nose. “Sorry,” she muttered, dragging her
right knee up to her chest and wresting her chin on it.
“Why?”
I asked, sitting up and crossing my legs.
“This
is a waste of time,” she said staring at a spot on the floor. “Jed was right.
This is just some stupid key that opens some old trunk or cupboard.” She
sighed. “There’s no point in looking anymore.” Pulling her other leg out from
under her, Josie pressed both of her knees into her chest and hugged them.
“Cheer
up José,” I whispered, as I crawled over to her side. “You know that’s not
true. In that book that you and Jed found the other week, about ancient keys
that one key was so close.” I realised afterwards that what I said sounded
rather vague, but I hoped that she realised what I meant.
Footsteps
ran towards us. Gasping, I jumped up. The footsteps got faster and closer.
“Who-oa,” came a voice, while shoes squeaked against the floor. It was one of
the twins. Coming to a halt, he held his arms out for balance, so as not to
fall onto our scatterings of books. “What’s goin’ on here then girls?” he
asked. There were more footsteps.
“Hide!”
gasped the other twin, panting as he reached us. “He’s right behind us.”
Holding a hand out to Josie, Fred pulled her up and he led the four of us
further down the library.
“Why
are we hiding?” I whispered, as we were ducked behind a cabinet.
“It’s
Percy,” said George. “He’s after us.”
“Why?”
Josie and I both asked.
“We
stole his Prefect badge,” Fred sniggered. “Now he’s mad.”
“So
why do we have to hide too?” I laughed.
“‘Cause,”
Fred shrugged with a grin.
“We
wouldn’t want you ratting us out now, would we?” said George.
“Ssh,”
Fred hissed, holding a finger up to his mouth. “He’s coming.”
The
door to the library slammed closed. The twins stared at one another. They
seemed to be communicating telepathically. Neither of them opened their mouths,
but one of them nodded, then the other. They appeared to have agreed on
something. “Fred! George!” Percy shouted. “I know you’re in here. Now give me
back my badge.” Hearing Percy’s footsteps near us, Fred and George led us along
a row of bookcases, before changing direction and running down another.
“Let’s
split up,” Fred instructed. George nodded and looking at me, he jerked his head
to the next row of books on our left. Fred and Josie ran off to the right.
Every time we crossed each other, Fred and George would toss the badge to one
another. Eventually Percy caught us. He was pretty mad, but Josie and I could
not stop laughing. Pretty soon, Fred and George were laughing too, and even
Percy saw the funny side of it eventually.
(Josie
had to explain to me which twin was which again as I was writing this – I don’t
know how she does it. I just keep getting them mixed up).

Jed’s
back! Some students came back yesterday, and others arrived back with Jed,
today. There are still a few more people left to turn up, but the school will
be back to normal by Monday. I’ve moved back into the Slytherin Common Room too
and Josie and I have filled Jed in on all of our little adventures. I think we
made him wish that he had stayed. “Seeing a tipsy McGonagall – I can’t believe
I missed that, man,” Jed sighed when we told him about the events of Christmas
Day. “You two were lucky – having the whole castle pretty much to yourselves.”
Jed was right. We were lucky and I will never forget it.
