KH3 Theory Week: Will Roxas Return?

(Josie Sayz: This is part of a mini-series that I’m working on, pondering over various theories surrounding the characters and events that may be revealed in ‘Kingdom Hearts III’ when it is released at the end of January next year. These theories are meant to be just light, fun and speculation – none of this if fact nor is it meant to be taken seriously. Today I am going to look into the importance that Roxas’ character will play in ‘Kingdom Herts III’.)

From the moment of his introduction into the ‘Kingdom Hearts’ series, Roxas has fast become a fan favourite. Therefore, it is of no surprise to hear that his character will play a significant – probably even vital, role in ‘Kingdom Hearts III’.

During one of the ‘Kingdom Hearts III’ trailers, Sora, Donald and Goofy can be seen talking to Lord Xemnas and Young Xehanort about Roxas. Sora blurts out that, “Roxas does exist; his heart’s inside my heart,” to which Lord Xemnas tells him that, “Nothing would please us more than Roxas’ return.” So that just leaves us with more questions: how will Roxas return? How important will Roxas be in bringing down Master Xehanort? Will Roxas become a vessel for Master Xehanort? Will the return of Roxas be the demise of Sora? Will Roxas even return at all? So many questions.

Connecting the dots, that were laid out for us in the trailers through the mentioning of data and code, will Roxas’ return have something to do with the simulation version of Twilight Town? Ansem the Wise/DiZ created a simulation of Twilight Town to contain Roxas until it was time for him to return to Sora (at the beginning of ‘Kingdom Hearts II’). It is also apparent from the simulation of Twilight Town that certain objects created in the virtual world can be transported into the real world – for example the balls from the Struggle Trophy. So, can Roxas’ data (body/shell) be extracted from the simulation world? And if so, if Sora were to free Roxas’ heart from his own, would Roxas’ heart go to his extracted data body, awakening him and returning all of his memories? Is that even possible? Well anything is possible in the ‘Kingdom Hearts’ universe.

Or will Sora be swayed by Lord Xemnas and Organisation XIII. Will Sora willingly give himself up to free Roxas from within him? I know that Sora isn’t stupid and would never willing give into the Organisation; however, if they messed with his mind enough and managed to convince him that giving up his heart and releasing Roxas’ was for the greater good, maybe Sora would consider it. He can be easily swayed when all hope seems to have completely slipped from his grasp. And if he gets separated from Donald, Goofy and his friends who knows what dark thoughts might plague his mind.

What will happen if Roxas returns? There are no confirmations of Roxas’ character in ‘Kingdom Hearts III’. We haven’t seen any character design or in-game images of him. This just makes his role in ‘Kingdom Hearts III’ all the more mysterious. Will he be the one to bring an end to Master Xehanort? We know that ‘Kingdom Hearts III’ is the end of the Xehanort Saga, so will Roxas be the one to bring him down? Will Roxas be the key to waking Ventus? If Roxas returns, will Master Xehanort want to make a vessel out of him – will Roxas be norted? Can both Sora and Roxas exist alongside one another? Will Roxas be the end of Sora, the main protagonist that we have come to love so much?

Regardless of how Roxas returns, will it be at the cost of Sora? We know that Roxas is Sora’s Nobody. His heart is inside of Sora. Will Sora risk his own life to bring Roxas back? Will Organisation XIII manipulate Sora into bringing Roxas back? Will Lea convince Sora to risk his life to bring Roxas back? Will Sora be willing to risk his own life if it meant bringing Roxas back? Will bringing Roxas back not affect Sora at all? If Roxas returns, will he be hunted down and become a part of Master Xehanort? Will Roxas meet his destruction at the end of ‘Kingdom Hearts III’? I would love to know your thoughts and I cannot wait until January when we can find out the answers to all of these buzzing questions.
